Xcel Energy's 16th Annual Day of Service brought together more than 1,000 volunteers across 44 projects with approximately 36 nonprofit partners. Together, they contributed more than 2,900 volunteer hours supporting communities across Colorado. For the second year in a row, Clayton Early Learning was proud to welcome Xcel volunteers to our campus, where they rolled up their sleeves to support our children and families.

Last year, Xcel volunteers cleared out one of Clayton's historic buildings to prepare it for renovations to house the Denver Center for African Art. This year, they tended the Moonbeam Garden, one of two growing learning labs on our campus. The garden teaches children about urban gardening and provides fresh produce for our school kitchen and for families' tables at home through the Clayton Cares Market.

For Lia Kelly, an Xcel Energy volunteer, the day was about more than the work itself. "We work a lot with kids, and one of the most important things about working with this community is knowing we're helping shape how children see the world," she said. "When they see us out here at Clayton Early Learning, working for them, that means something. It tells them people care about them, and that makes them care more about their community, too."

Xcel describes Day of Service as a way to strengthen its connection to the communities it serves and to support the work of nonprofit partners. We're grateful to Xcel for the time, care, and energy their volunteers bring to our campus.
