OUR STORY: CLAYTON EARLY LEARNING

In 1859, George W. Clayton arrived in Denver as the city was just beginning to grow around the promise of gold. He opened a shop serving miners and, despite personal loss, turned his energy toward building a stronger community, amassing a large fortune along the way. Clayton would later be known as Denver’s first philanthropist, helping to start one of Denver’s first public schools while serving on City Council and laying the groundwork for an enduring commitment to education.

Clayton left his fortune to the city, and his vision became reality in 1911 with the opening of Clayton College for Boys. For fifty years, the College provided education, shelter, and care to hundreds of children, shaping lives and strengthening families.

Today, Clayton Early Learning continues that mission in new ways, serving children and families across Denver. While our work has grown and our programs have evolved, the heart of Clayton remains the same: a dedication to nurturing young minds, supporting families, and building a stronger, healthier community—just as George Clayton imagined over 150 years ago.
