A Taste of Hope: Clayton and Partners Deliver Thousands of Empanadas to Local Families

This season, the warmth of community is felt not just in words, but in the aroma of 6,000 freshly baked empanadas filling the halls of Clayton Early Learning. Thanks to the generosity of Lorena Cantarovici and Maria Empanada, thousands of families across Metro Denver, many still recovering from the recent federal government shutdown and the resulting strain on food benefits, received a meaningful reminder that neighbors look out for one another.

To help meet the moment, Clayton Early Learning proudly joined forces with Mile High United Way, Warren Village, Elevate for Change, and Food Bank of the Rockies, distributing empanadas to families who need them most. On an otherwise quiet Sunday, Clayton’s dedicated food team filled the school kitchen with laughter, purpose, and trays upon trays of empanadas. They worked for hours—baking and packaging—ensuring every pastry was made with care before being shared with Clayton families and our nonprofit partners.

Clayton families received their empanadas through the Clayton Cares Market, our no-cost weekly food shopping experience. Since 2021, the Market has offered families the dignity of choice—fresh, culturally relevant, healthy foods selected according to their own tastes and needs. These empanadas became part of that tradition of nourishment and respect.

As our president and CEO, William Browning, shared: “We are deeply grateful to Lorena Cantarovici and Maria Empanada for this generous donation. At a time when so many families are feeling the strain, these empanadas are more than food; they are a reminder that our community shows up for one another. We are proud to work alongside these amazing community partners under the leadership of Mile High United Way to ensure families have what they need during this difficult moment. Coming together to feed hungry families reflects the very best of Colorado, and we’re honored to be part of this shared effort.”

In moments of challenge, Colorado’s spirit shines brightest. The partnership behind this donation was rooted in compassion, teamwork, and a shared belief in the strength of our community when it comes together to support families.
