Looking for training and observation services using the Environment Rating Scales™ (ERS) and the Classroom Assessment Scoring System® (CLASS)? We can help with that! Our classroom experts maintain reliability with the Environment Rating Scale Institute (ERSI) for ERS and maintain certification with Teachstone for CLASS®. In addition to classroom assessment, we specialize in playgrounds, having Certified Playground Safety Inspectors and National Program for Playground Safety Inspectors. All of our trainers not only have many years of experience in the field of early childhood, training adult-learners, and conducting assessments but also continue to assess classrooms using ERS and CLASS® tools for various projects across the state. Our trainers are in the field doing the work, uniquely enabling them to provide the most current information and assessor tips from the field. Training is rigorous to maintain this expertise, thus, you can always expect a high-quality experience. Not in the Denver-Metro area? We can come to you for all trainings and services.

Services Offered by Our Team of Experts

  • These courses are an in-depth study of the Environment Rating Scale (ERS) of your choice, these scales were created to assess classrooms using a seven-point scale, from inadequate to excellent levels. During these courses, we discuss the interpretation of specific indicators, the research, and rationale for the requirements, and how the scales are currently used for the Colorado Shines rating system. Each course will have practice video observations, hands-on activities, and will provide suggestions on how to meet the scale’s criteria in different classroom/family home settings. Participants will gain a deep understanding of the scale and develop the skills necessary to complete an observation as part of their certification process.

  • These courses are an overview of the Environment Rating Scale of your choice. During these courses, we discuss the interpretation of specific indicators, the research, and rationale for the requirements, and how programs can make small significant changes to improve the quality of environments they offer to children. This course is geared towards early childhood professionals who are working with children in these classrooms, are new to the field of Early Childhood, or are planning to provide mentoring services to classrooms currently using the Environment Rating Scales for continuous quality improvement. These courses do not prepare participants for the certification process.

  • This course examines how biases can affect your everyday life as well as how we look at early childhood classrooms. During this course, participants will introduce themselves culturally, will experience a safe space to share their own experiences, and will be part of small group discussion topics that will help them understand why we are biased, identify stereotypes, and recognize their own biases and how they impact their work and classroom assessment. This course is a requirement to become certified on any of the Environment Rating Scales.

  • These trainings are half-day (3 hours) or full day (6 hours) overviews of the CLASS® tool of your choice with the intention of providing a general understanding of the tool to any early childhood professional interested in learning more. The participants will have a variety of activities that will allow them to understand what the CLASS® tool measures, understand the link between effective teacher-child interactions and learning gains, and identify the teacher-child interactions associated with each CLASS® dimension. These trainings have been developed by Teachstone® and are delivered by licensed affiliate trainers.

  • These trainings consist of two full days of in-depth CLASS® content and coding practice using video observations of the CLASS® tool of your choice. The participants will have a variety of activities that will allow them to understand what the CLASS® tool measures, understand the link between effective teacher-child interactions and learning gains, identify the teacher-child interactions associated with each CLASS® dimension, and code classroom videos using the CLASS® measure. These trainings prepare you to be a certified CLASS® assessor. These trainings have been developed by Teachstone® and are delivered by licensed affiliate trainers.

  • This course will provide participants with a deeper level of understanding of playground safety in early childhood settings. Participants will learn about the S.A.F.E. model (Supervision, Age Appropriate Design, Fall Surfacing, and Equipment Maintenance). This training also includes the 10 myths of playgrounds and helpful training sheets to use in programs as both administrators and teachers.

  • ERS Full Day and Cultural Competency trainings are a requirement before becoming certified and must have been completed within the last two years. Certification in the Environment Rating Scales provides early childhood professionals with a live opportunity to use the skills gained in training. Being certified shows that you are capable of observing in classrooms using the Environment Rating Scales and that you have additional expertise. Participants wishing to go through the certification process should email the ERS team at Clayton to set up a date for each scale they want to certify. The participants will spend a full day with a highly trained ERS team member, who will guide them through a three-hour observation and answer questions about observing using the Environment Rating Scale. Participants will score the classroom observation, alongside their ERS team member, discuss scoring rationale, and reach a consensus score following the observation. In order to become certified, they must reach a 75% agreement with the ERS team member’s scores and write a feedback report for the program within two months of the observation. Please note, the participants seeking certification must set up their own observations outside of the program they work. If a participant needs assistance finding a classroom, they can ask the ERS team to help them find a classroom. This certification is valid for one year, certified observers must go through the certification observation every year after initial certification maintain certification. If your certification lapses, re-training on the Environment Rating Scale and Cultural Competency will be required.   • This service is available to programs/family homes going through continuous quality improvement processes wishing to have a practice ERS observation. This is a great way to practice prior to an official Colorado Shines rating and is available for ECERS-R, ITERS-R, FCCERS-R, and SACERS-U. This includes a three-hour observation, followed by an interview with the lead teacher. There are several different options for feedback after the observation and all can be customized to fit your needs. The options include 1) observation and scores, 2) observation and feedback report, and 3) observation, feedback report, and phone consultation. If this observation is being done for the PDIS professional credential, documentation will be sent to PDIS for the teacher being observed upon request.   • This service is available to programs/family homes going through continuous quality improvement processes wishing to have CLASS® observation. If you need a recent CLASS® observation as part of your Colorado Shines rating, this observation meets the criteria. This is available for Infant, Toddler, and PreK CLASS®. There are several different options for feedback after the observation and all can be customized to fit your needs. The options include 1) observation and scores, 2) observation and feedback report, and 3) observation, feedback report, and phone consultation. If this observation is being done for the PDIS professional credential or as part of Colorado Shines, documentation will be sent for the teacher being observed upon request.   • Thanks to the support of our wonderful sponsors, we are able to provide these meetings at no cost. Clayton Early Learning and Qualistar Colorado collaborate to provide these meetings to the community. Meetings are designed for coaches, certified observers, and other interested early childhood professionals to provide the latest information about the field of early childhood in Colorado, the Environment Rating Scales, and Colorado Shines rating system. The participants will get to network with each other and meet other early childhood professionals from across Colorado. This meeting is offered twice a year once in the fall and once in late spring.

  • A playground safety audit consists of an examination of the playground equipment, surfacing, and signage using agency policies and procedures and current standards to identify both compliant and non-compliant conditions. This audit is conducted by an individual with a current, valid CPSI (Certified Playground Safety Inspector) certification. The program then receives a report that determines a hazard priority rating for all non-compliant conditions based on the results. The program then uses this information to create a repair/removal or replacement priorities plan based on injury potential. If you need a playground audit for Colorado Shines, this service meets that requirement.

  • A consultation will be completed by an individual with a current CPSI (Certified Playground Safety Inspector) certification. This service is completely customizable to fit your needs. This may consist of any/all of the following:
    • Advise on changes to an existing playground
    • Advise on appropriate equipment to purchase to modify/ change an existing playground
    • Review blueprints for a new playground
    • Review guidelines for appropriate cushioning/ use zone/ parking bollards, etc.
