Helen Thorpe & more than 400 Comcast Cares Day Volunteers to Support Early Childhood Education at Clayton Early Learning

--Wide variety of volunteer activities all support literacy & outdoor learning at Clayton’s Historic Campus--

WHAT: Helen Thorpe, noted author, mother, and First Lady of Colorado, will join more than 400 Comcast Cares Day volunteers for an all-day volunteer event at Clayton Early Learning. All activities will help promote Early Childhood Education, including:

  • - Dialogic Reading Sessions – Clayton educators will teach volunteers the fundamentals of dialogic reading.  Volunteers will learn the most beneficial ways to engage children during storytelling to encourage reading comprehension skills. 
  • - Assembling Literacy Through Discovery backpacks – Volunteers will fill children’s backpacks with materials to encourage learning and the exploration of the campus Living and Learning environments.
  • - Transforming an empty area into a Living and Learning Garden Classroom, filled with play areas, tactile plants, “wood cookies” or stepping stones and balance beams crafted from wood harvested from the necessary removal of large trees on Clayton’s campus.  New trees will also be planted to replace the ones lost due to weather and construction.
  • - Installation of new sod, painting of rooms in historic buildings, campus clean-up and cleaning of the children’s learning materials.

WHEN: SATURDAY, APRIL 21, 2012, 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.   Welcome at 8:30 am; Helen Thorpe Reading to Children at 9:00 – 9:20 a.m. (reading will be the One Book 4 Colorado selection); outdoor volunteer activities to run all day; dialogic reading sessions to run from 10:00 a.m. – noon.

WHERE: Clayton Early Learning Campus, 3801 Martin Luther King Blvd.  Parking located behind the Clayton Administration Building and in front of Clayton Educare School.

WHO: Clayton President and CEO, Charlotte Brantley; noted author and First Lady of Colorado, Helen Thorpe, Chairman of Clayton Board of Trustees, Dori Biester; Cathy Kilstrom, Senior Vice President of   Customer Care for Comcast Cable Corporation’s West Division, other early childhood education advocates, and more than 400 Comcast and Clayton Early Learning volunteers.
