Lt. Gov. Garcia leads Colorado Literacy Week tour

DENVER — Friday, May 16, 2014 — Lt. Governor Joe Garcia will lead a statewide Colorado Literacy Week tour next week from Monday, May 19 to Friday, May 23 in order to engage communities in efforts to improve the state’s early literacy rates.

Lt. Gov. Garcia will begin the tour in the Denver Metro area with stops in Denver, Northglenn and Aurora, and then continue on to Bayfield, Durango, Grand Junction, Clifton, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Lyons, Estes Park, Boulder and Lafayette. The tour will include visits to various schools, readings to students, book giveaways, literacy program tours, such as Reach Out and Read Clinics and college early childhood educator preparation programs, as well as meetings with school officials, early childhood education leaders and community stakeholders about the importance of literacy in Colorado. Lt. Gov. Garcia will also focus on how parents, educators, community organizations and policy makers can come together to improve the literacy outcomes for Colorado’s youngest students.

Data shows one-quarter of Colorado students read below grade level at 3rd grade, a major predictor of future academic and career struggles. In order to improve early literacy the state created the Colorado Reads: Early Literacy Initiative, a joint effort between state agencies, community organizations and Colorado’s business community. SERVE Colorado, Governor Hickenlooper’s commission on community service, leads the community partnership efforts of Colorado Reads, including Colorado Literacy Week.

As part of Colorado Literacy Week 2014, McDonald’s restaurants will offer free breakfast and a free book to all four year olds during breakfast hours on Monday, May 19th to help ensure young children have reading materials in their home.

The complete schedule of events is listed below. Lt. Gov. Garcia will be available for literacy phone interviews throughout the week in addition to being available for press comments at each event.
